This is Finbarr's 1980's Specialized Stump Jumper. I love these 80's Stump Jumpers, they are just fantastic bicycles. They are built so well with such nice components and function so well. They are go anywhere do anything bicycles. They are great commuter bicycles and fantastic Adventure bicycles. I love them!!
Finbarr's Stump jumper is in pretty good starting shape. The seat post is stuck but that can be fixed. I did find out a little into it that the freewheel was also stuck. The paint is in pretty good shape and should polish nicely. The Stump Jumper will receive new cables, bearings, tires, tubes and maybe new brake pads if I can find them like the originals. Finbarr found a very nice saddle for the Stump Jumper.
I can't wait to ride the Stump Jumper. I had one just like it years ago. I loved that bike and in a weak moment I sold it. I regret selling it. I also want to see how it compares to my early Miyata Ridge Runner.

With the frame stripped of the components I find the frame to be in pretty good shape. Everything I tried, all my tricks and processes could not budge the seat post. As a last resort I used a chemical that would eat the aluminum seat post but not hurt the steel of the frame.

While I was working and waiting on the seat post I worked on the wheels. I found that the freewheel was frozen to the wheel hub. All my tricks for removing stuck freewheels did not work. In the end after about 4 or 5 days of penetrating oil and very carefully applying heat the freewheel finally broke free with my very big crescent wrench.
With the free wheel removed I worked on the wheels. The wheels have beautiful pressed in cartridge bearings. You don't do much with cartridge bearings other then clean them up a little. Cartridge bearings you pretty much just ride until they don't work anymore. The wheel hubs cleaned and polished beautifully. The wheel rims also cleaned and polished very nicely. I love these rims.

The frame polished beautifully. I really like the red color. I had to apply some touch up paint around the seat lug and back of the seat tube. The chemical removed a little paint there. I like the frame so much.

The headset and bottom bracket are in okay shape to start. I cleaned all the pieces in the crock pot and worked them on the polishing wheel. The headset was little rough and it didn't polish perfectly but better then it was. The bottom bracket turned out great. With new bearings and grease the headset and bottom bracket spin perfect.

I love the handlebar and stem set up on the Stump Jumper. The bull moose stem is awesome! I polished the stem and handlebars by hand. The stem and handlebars are very quality, you can tell because the highly polished surfaces have a clear coat applied, this requires hand polishing. Installed the handlebars and stem looks fantastic!

I am kind of mad because I can't find a few before photos. The Brake calipers before photos are some of them. I love these cantilever brake calipers, they work very well and I love how they look. They are very sleek compared to later calipers. The brake calipers turned out very nice.

The shift levers are awesome levers. I actually like a good friction shift lever over an indexed lever. A good friction shift lever will be very smooth and actually shift at easy points. And it takes a little skill to be good at it. Sometimes I think all the skill in the world is going away with technology.

That completes the Stump Jumper. It took a little bit of tuning and the weather wasn't cooperating to do the tuning but it is now dialed in and a joy to ride. Its hard to beat these earlier stump jumpers. I love them and regret selling mine.
I really like the looks of the Stump Jumper. Everything polished beautifully. I couldn't be happier. The Stump Jumper would be a fantastic bike to through a addle bag on and go riding all day on any terrain or better yet through a rack on it and go camping for a couple days. I love it!!
