This is Joel's 1976 Schwinn Town & Country Tri-Wheeler. This Tri- Wheeler has quit a history. It was owned by a family in Oswego, Illinois. The Tri-Wheeler basket had every child's photo taken in and many rides. The Tri-wheeler was also flipped, tipped and rolled and wheelies where done. The Tri-Wheeler came with a license plate attached to the basket with the name Mary on it, the Tri-wheeler was known as Mary from then on and will be continued to be known as Mary.
Mary is going to receive a restoration with new tire tubes, a NOS shift cable and lever, a new brake cable and a replacement seat post to replace the bent one. I have restored a couple trike bicycles before but none where Schwinns. I am excited to restore this Schwinn.
The Tri-Wheeler I think is pretty nice under the years. There is some grime and dullness that I think will go away. The Tri-wheeler pulled very hard to the left, I can see a slight crookedness in the frame, I think that can be straightened out. Overall I think the Tri-Wheeler will turn out very nice.

Breaking down the Tri-Wheeler was interesting, it felt a little like pulling an engine or transmission from a truck. It took a little thought on how to attack the restoration and what sections to keep together.

With the main frame stripped down I find the paint to be okay starting shape. What looks like rust is actually the red primer under the yellow paint. There also was a little spider nest in the back drop out pinch. I gave the frame a good cleaning and started the polishing.

I worked through a couple of polishing grits and a good amount of buffing. The frame polishing turned out great!! The yellow has a deep luster now and a lot darker, it looks so much better with dullness and paleness polished away. The decals also turned out great! I love this stuff!

The rear drive train section was very interesting to work on. The rear wheels where solid to the axles and the cotter pins where frozen in place. I could have removed the cotter pins but I wasn't sure if we would find replacements the same. There are no bearings in the rear wheel hubs, they are fixed to the axles, so it was best to leave the wheels in place. The Shimano 3 speed hub was in working condition and if a three speed Shimano hub is working it is best to leave it be, I just flushed it and made sure it was oiled. I cleaned all the pieces and worked through the polishing grits. In the end the drive train section turned out fantastic and works very well.

The front wheel was in descent shape. I broke the wheel down and worked through the polishing. I trued the wheel and packed new bearings and grease. Overall the front wheel turned out great!

The headset had the typical Schwinn Headset rust and dried bearings. After some time in the crock pot I worked through he polishing wheels. The headset looks great installed and with bearings freshly packed it spins great.

The stem and handlebars had the typical Schwinn rust. I cleaned all the pieces and then worked the polishing wheels. The stem turned out fantastic!! The handlebars also turned out great! I am stunned with the photos of the headset, stem and handlebars installed next to that polished yellow paint!!

The rear basket bracket had some rough spots to work through and the fenders are also connected to the bracket. I cleaned everything and worked through polishing. The hardware I placed in a solution I made to kind of return the original factory finish. In the end I couldn't be happier with the results of the basket bracket.

Next was the chain guard and chain. I very very carefully cleaned and polished the chain guard, it probably is the best Tri-Wheeler chain guard around.

I polished the brake lever. It looks fantastic! The brake lever has a built in parking brake. I could not get it to work no matter what I did, I planned a leather strap to act like a parking brake. When I delivered the Tri-Wheeler to Joel I forgot the leather strap so I tried the parking brake one more time and it worked perfectly and I think it has worked perfectly ever since. Sometimes the soul of a bicycle has its own mind.

The new old stock brake cable and brake lever are perfect. It looks amazing installed. The photoed one has a red marker, I later changed it to a black marker.

The Mary plate and basket. The basket took a good amount of time to cleaning but it turned out great! I would tell you my secret but I spent a lot of time figuring it out, maybe someday I will let it out. I attached the Mary plate a little nicer then the wire and it looks great also!!

The rear wheels need truing and if I removed them they still would't go on the wheel stand, I had to come up with a way to mark true, a screw driver and zip ties did the trick.

The Tri-Wheeler was so much fun to ride, it is so different from a two wheel bicycle. Turning corners to fast is a very thrilling experience! This was so much fun restoring the Tri-Wheeler.
When I delivered the Tri-Wheeler to Joel in Oswego I was fortunate enough to meat the family that use to own the Tri-Wheeler. Meeting the family and seeing their reaction to the Tri-Wheeler made me feel very good at the work I had done.
