The Miyata frame came in a while back and bad timing as my painter and powder coater decided to move to California just after the frame came in. A few tries of other powder coaters in the area did not work out well at all and led to me purchasing my own powder coating equipment.
This Team Miyata frame has quickly moved into my top five favorite frames, the chrome stays and chrome fork have a lot to do with that.
The Miyata frame will receive new top tube cable brackets and new powder coating. The fork is actually all chrome under the paint so the new scheme will be an all chrome fork. The chrome stays will also be schemed to show as much chrome as possible.
In most places the frame paint is in very good shape but some areas on the under side are pretty bad and brazing the new cable brackets will destroy a lot of paint. It would have been nice to keep the original paint but would not work out.

I have been looking for these next photos for a few weeks, I take over 10,000 photos a month and could not find these on the memory cards but I am very happy I found them.
I used a hand saw to remove the brackets which leaves a raised area. I then removed the raised area with a very sharp file. There is a movement you use with a file to follow a curved surface. It is so opposite of what you would think I wish I could show it in photos.
With the surface prepared I use a stiff wire to hold the bracket in place while brazing. When the brazing is complete I do some clean up with wire brushes, files and emery paper.
I am very pleased with the results of the brazing of the brackets. There will be no worries about the old brackets failing now.
I powder coated the frame and applying the clear coat I got some bubbling. It took a few days last week and all weekend to remove the powder coat from the frame, that is how strong and tough powder coat is. This morning, Monday I will clean the frame again, do one more pass through the media blasting booth because media blasting is the most important thing for powder coating, it leaves a very consistent surface. And then one more cleaning of the surface and then the beginning of the powder coating process again.
The powder coating this time around has been going good. I laid down the black and then masked it off for the blue. The first coat of blue went down thin as I worked it into hard to reach areas. When the first coated was backed I started wet sanding a few areas.
I have some more wet sanding to do before the next coat of blue and then all clear.
I am very happy with the mask line of the black and blue, it just takes time to properly mask it but so worth it!!

I envy your ability to not only do the standard bike mechanic stuff but to also paint frames and braze metal - a true craftsman I am sure this bike is going to be great when done.
