Joel's Schwinn Tiger has a few rough areas but over all it is in great condition for it's age. The Tiger is going to get almost a complete restoration along with some new cables, cable housings and new brake pads. Gilly's Schwinn Tiger turned out amazing, I can't wait to see the results of Joel's !

I gave the frame a good cleaning and then started the polishing by hand with actually a pretty course grit. It took quit a while but I worked through all of the grits. The red paint polished beautifully, it has a deep shine but it is a hand rubbed shine that has some originality to it. I wasn't totally happy with the paint chips, the rust was pretty thick in those areas. A lot of the rust cleaned and polished away, I will hit those areas with a clear to help them from getting worse. Overall I a happy with the results of the frame. The red is a great color, it has a ruby like look to it that is very cool!

I cleaned the headset pieces and polished them at the same time I did the black Tigers headset. The plan was to restore both at the same time and follow both but the size and weight of the Tigers made that not practical. The headset cleaned great and polished even better. New grease and the headset spins supper smooth! My favorite headset of them all, I love the lines of the top bearing cap.

The handlebar and stem unit has some surface rust and a few rough spots but this is where the biggest difference is going to be made in the Tiger. The handlebars has a little surface rust and dullness and the stem has the same surface rust. The headlamp is in great shape but it is made to run on a dynamo so later I will attempt to convert it to a battery. The brake levers will polish up like new. And a restored headlamp bracket will make a world of difference.
The handlebars and stem cleaned and polished beautifully on the polishing wheels, I am thrilled with the results and installed they look even better!

The brake levers polished beautifully, but these brake levers also polish beautifully. I am very happy with the results!

I went back and fourth on how to polish the brake calipers. I thought of maybe leaving them in the condition they where and run them through the sonic cleaners but that just didn't do it. I broke them down and polished the pieces. The brake calipers turned out so very nice and they function great too! I couldn't be happier!

I was very surprised to open up the crank and to have seen it was probably overhauled not to long ago. But with the crank cleaned and broken down i can give it a good polishing and bring out the shine. The bottom bracket pieces polished very nice and the crank polished great. The only thing is a little bit of thin chrome where a shoe would rub but not bad at all.

It is hard to tell in the photos the difference polishing the chain guard made but it actually made quite a bit of difference. I cleaned the chain guard first, made a big difference in the underside. I then hand polished the chain guard to protect the decals. The part that makes a huge difference is the chain guard hardware cleaned and polished. It is also a joy to reassemble a bike with all the hardware looking and feeling new.

Next is work on the fenders. The fenders are in great shape or slightly rough shape depending on how you look at it. Fenders take a beating and if you look at these fenders they have some wear but not a lot of ware or straight damage like they can have. I am in the process of working on the fenders now, more to come.

The front fender polished pretty good. The white tipped front polished really nice. The rear end of the front fender was rougher, it is straight but there is a lot of scraps and chips. Some of those scraps look better then they did but over all the front fender turned out nice. The struts cleaned up very nice and look great. Installed the front fender looks really good.

The rear fender is very straight and damaged free but has some scraps and chips, mostly at the rear. Over all the fender for it's age is in great starting shape. I worked through some course polishing grit by hand to remove and deep dirty and polish some of the scuffs out. I then worked though all the grits. The rear fender paint ended up polishing pretty nice, the fender struts turned out great. Installed the rear fender looks great. All the polished mounting hardware really makes a nice difference. Overall I am very happy with the fenders.

The wheels are in descent starting shape, there is some rust and pitting on the rims but what surprised me was the hubs had new grease added not long ago. They weren't exactly cleaned out but new grease was added.
I started with the front wheel. The wheel hub was dirty, dull and had a few spots of surface rust. I cleaned out the old grease and polished the hub and rim and treated the spokes. The front wheel hub polished very nice! The spokes really cleaned up nice. The wheel rim polished pretty good, there is a little rust pitting here and there but overall not to bad. The old Schwinn tire really cleaned up nice, the white wall came back a long way. Overall I am very happy with the front wheel. It looks great installed under the fender and all the polished chrome.

Occasionally the rear 3 speed hub would slip on Joel. I broke open the rear hub and was shocked how clean the internals where. I checked all the internal pieces, springs and paw pins and found now wear that would be a reason for slipping. I am hoping the slipping was just an old shift cable and adjusting it.
For how amazing the inside of the hub was the outside had some very thick and hard grease and dirt. Joel cleaned a lot of it up when he got the Tiger but there still was a good deal stuck around the spokes and between the cog and body.
I cleaned all the grease and dirt and polished the bub and rim. The hub polished beautifully! The rear rim polished very nice with some rust pitting here and there. With the hub polished I started on the rolling bearings and axle pieces. These bearings and pieces where a bit gummed up considering how clean the inside was. I put the axle pieces through the crock pot and then cleaned off and stuck pieces. Packed in new grease the bearings spin great and will really have the Tiger rolling smooth and efficient.! I love this stuff!

Next on the list was the three speed shift lever. The shift lever is a little rough and gritty. I flushed and cleaned the internals of the shift lever many times and then lubricated. It now functions very nice. With the shift lever functioning nicely I worked on the polishing wheels. The shift lever polished very nice and looks great installed!

Next was the handlebar grips. The handlebar grips are in good condition to start. They are a little dirty and a little yellowed. A good amount of the dirt in the before photo was from removing the grips. I cleaned and treated the handlebar grips and they look great! Installed they look even better!

Before is a photo of a lot of the hardware before. So far I have polished and cleaned it all but have only installed the shift cable stop and shift cable wheel. Both look great installed and make all the difference in the restoration.

The front and rear racks are in very good shape, even better then the black Tiger's racks. There was mainly a little light surface rust and some light rust at the joints. I cleaned away the rust and then did a lot of hand polishing. The racks turned out great and look great installed. The rear rack reflectors had some yellowing but not bad, I wish they whitened a little more but I also didn't wan't to cause and damage.

The headlamp has some rust pitting and is dirty but polished pretty good. The headlamp mounting hardware polished beautifully and makes all the difference.
I am planing to convert the headlamp from a generator light to battery powered. I have converted a few Raleigh headlamps no problem. The first attempt at the conversion has not worked out hoping the second works better. I will admit picturing electrical schematics is not my strong point. If the second time does not work I will consult my genius engineer father.
For now the headlamp is back on the bike and looks great installed. I think I need to take a few more photos of the headlamp installed.

At this time I wired the brakes. I guess I also need to take a few more photos of the Tiger wired. I had to order a slightly longer 3 speed cable, I think it should come today or tomorrow morning. After some thought the dark Ice Gray cable housing color was chosen. I think the dark color goes much better with the ruby red color of the frame.

Only things left are to finish removing the damaged Bike Shop decal, finish the pedals which are soaking a little while longer and to figure out the headlamp conversion. Oh, and install the shift cable when it gets here. Check back soon.
Just about complete on Joel's 3 speed Tiger. I found a toggle switch I was happy with that had a nice look to fit the Tiger for the headlamp conversion. I can't seem to find a photo of the wiring on the inside in the uploaded photos. I will take a photo of that. The lamp now runs on a 9 volt battery. An additional on of switch was added where the generator wire entered the head lamp. The top switch did not have an actual off position so it would drain the battery. The piece that allows the generator wire to enter is intact and taped to the inside. I am very happy with the headlamp. An LED bulb later down the road will complete it.

The original pedals cleaned up and polished fairly good but they where very worn and one pedal had a bad bend in the pedal axle. They would have worked in a pinch but they made annoying noises and riding with a bent pedal feels very annoying. Joel found these replacement pedals. I cleaned and lubricated the pedals and then worked through the polishing. The pedals polished very nice and look great. Best of all they function much better, no worn feel, no annoying noises and no annoying bend! Very pleased!!

I rode the 3 speed Tiger today. After a quick adjustment on the tightness of the rear wheel bearings the Tiger is riding fantastic! The ride is incredible for a bike the age of the middle weights. I would describe the ride as very smooth and very tight. What I mean by tight is the mechanical parts of the bike feel like they have no wear at all, nothing feels loose, everything feels tight and smooth like a new bike. I am very happy with the ride!
The looks of the 3 speed Tiger are amazing. The paint has some rough spots but nothing to rough, it has the original character of a bike that was taken very good care of. The ruby red paint shines in the sun! All the chrome came back beautifully and that really makes the restoration! The stem and headlamp shine, the rims are in amazing shape for the age. The wheel hubs are perfect. I really like the choice of the dark ice cray cable housings. I love this stuff!!

It was hard to get a good photo of the head badge but this is one of my favorite head badges I have seen. The Ruby Red lettering is perfect with the frame paint.
