Gilly's 1962 Black Schwinn Tiger Preservation Tigers Together! |
My plan was to do the work on both at the same time and kind of compare them as I went but that idea proved to be to ambitious. The Tigers are just to heavy and big to move around my small shop and just to heavy to keep moving in and out of the stand. Even the bare frame is to heavy to move in and out of the stand, I don't want to damage the decals by moving the frames in and out of the stand. the less movement the better.
The Tiger are going to get a mechanical overhaul, the chrome pieces are going to be polished. Bearings will be packed in new grease. The black and red paint will get a hand polish to keep a more original look. all the rubber pieces will be deep cleaned. And new cables for the red 3 speed Tiger.
I really like the way the middle weight Schwinn's ride. They ride so much better then the heavy weights. Best of all I love the lines of the frame on these Tigers, I can't wait to see how they turn out.
I actually started by working on both and started on the headsets together, that did not go well with the size and weight and moving around so I put the headset back on the red Tiger and broke the Gilly's black Tiger down.
Below are the two starting photos of both Tigers and then right into the black single speed Schwinn Tiger.

With the bike broken down I can see there are not many chips or scratches at all. Or at least for a 50+ year old bike! The Schwinn Tiger frame will be given a deep cleaning and a hand polishing.

It took a lot more elbow grease then I thought but polishing the frame by hand turned out amazing. The frame got a good cleaning and then I worked through a few polishing grits by hand. The black took on the original luster and the decals are perfect. I am very happy with the results! I have a hard time photographing black paint with all the bright white in my shop so I hope the photos show how nice the black paint turned out.

The headsets in both Tigers felt gritty and tight to me. Opening the black Tiger's headset I found a combination of new grease and some spots of old hard grease. I think the headset was set to tight and then the little bits of hard grease acted like speed bumps for the bearings which gave the gritty feel.
The headset is currently in the crock pot, next the sonic cleaner and onto the polishing wheels.

The crank was rebuilt last summer so I wasn't originally going to open it up. But looking at it and the frame behind it it would just be easier to remove it for cleaning and polishing. The bottom bracket had the new grease and the bearings look good. There are a few spots of hard grease that will go away and all the pieces will look great after polishing.
Bottom bracket is currently in the sonic cleaner.

The handlebars and stem are probably the roughest which is really not all that rough when considering how good of shape the Tiger is. I broke down the handlebars and stem and started the cleaning and polishing. I had to polish the handlebars by hand to make sure I did not make the few rust spots worse. The handlebars turned out great. The stem polished very nice, the stem bolts polished make a world of difference. There is just a slight bit of rust pitting on the underside of the stem. Over all the stem and handlebars turned out great!

Small hardware on a bike can make or break a restoration or preservation. Below is all the hardware for the chain guard, fenders and coaster brake. You really don't notice them now, when everything else is cleaned and hand polished or polished they stick out like sore thumbs and bring everything down a few levels. The hardware polished beautifully!

The chain guard is in good shape to start with. There are a few scratches that hit the Tiger decal but not bad. Overall the decals are in amazing shape. There is a little chip and slight bend in the top front edge of the fender. I was able to work out the bend or dent no problem. My first attempt at touch up paint was horrible so I cleaned that off and its just they way it was for now.

The rear wheel is next. The rear coaster brake was not working its best, there was a little dried grease on the brake shoes and braking surface. It looks like the rear hub had a minor rebuild not long ago. It was a combination of old dirt and grease and new grease. There also was way way to much grease in the braking area. You need some grease in this area but this coaster brake was packed like it is 1978 and its going down Repack in California. This coaster brake isn't mountain biking.
I broke the rear hub down and started the cleaning of the pieces. Some pieces got a good cleaning, a few of the silver pieces got polished. The Bendix brake arm was not polished, there is a few rough spots but the way the piece is made if I polished it it would look horrible. I made it look the best I could.
The wheel hub polished very nice and the rim polished amazing. The chrome looks almost new!
I packed the bearings in new grease, greased all the other areas appropriately and assembled the hub. The wheel looks amazing installed! THe wheel hub looks almost new and the rim looks even better! I really love this stuff!!

I broke down the front wheel hub, the front wheel hub had to have been rebuilt not long ago at all. I cleaned all the pieces and polished a few of them. I also cleaned and polished the hub and rim. The hub and rim polished beautifully. New grease and the wheel spins super fast and smooth.
I soaked the spoke nipples for a week or so before starting work. The spoke nipples really cleaned up and polished nice. They look like new. I soak the spoke nipples as long as I can before starting work to make sure they are all free to spin. I also cleaned and treat all the spokes on both the front and rear wheel. They are galvanized spokes so they start to galvanize pretty quick but since they where cleaned and treated they galvanize very even a look great. I am very happy with the results of the wheels!

I like the front rack, I have always liked the lines on these Schwinn front racks, I know I am in the minority on that opinion but I like what I like. The front rack is in good condition. There is a little surface rust at the joints and in the spring. I cleaned the rack and hand polished it. The surface rust went away and the joints look great. I need to polish on the polishing wheel the connector piece to the headset so for now I only installed the rack to the fork.

I think the chain has soaked enough at this point so I installed the chain. Looks like a ridable bike now! Only the pedals to go to take it a for a test spin!

The rear rack had the same little surface rust as the front rack in the joints. It is almost done polishing. I will install the rear rack, finish the pedals, polish the head lamp and bell and the first Tiger will be complete!
The rear rack turned out great! The little bit of surface rust is gone. The rear reflectors had a lot of dirt and yellowing. I was not able to remove the yellow but they did clean up great! Sometimes I can get the yellow do go away but these where just to delicate and after a little bit of trying I did not want to damage them. Both racks installed the Tiger looks incredible!
The pedals are in rough shape but actually really good shape for a bicycle this old. Pedals take such a beating. I flushed and lubricated the pedals, gave the rubber blocks a good deep cleaning and polished the chrome the best it would. I also tightened the rubber blocks so the don't twist while applying force. I wish the pedals would have come out just a slight bit better but overall they are not bad at all!
One last this to do to the front rack was installing the headset bracket.
The head lamp took a little time but it sure was worth it. The lamp cleaned up very well and then polished amazingly! The brackets and bolts cleaned and polished make all the difference. Installed the light look perfect!
The head lamp is missing the protective lens. If anyone has one that they are willing to give up contact me and I will send it the info forward to Joel and Gilly.
I also installed the head lamp after I brought the bike up from the basement shop. It is a heavy bike and I did not want to bring it back down to just install the head lamp.
I also cleaned and polished the bell at this time. The bell polished great and the mounting bracket looks brand new. This is an awesome bell, as you press the lever the whole bell spins! So cool!
Today the weather is beautiful! 34 degrees and sunny! I feel spring coming!! (In a few months.........)
With the nice weather I took the Tiger for a ride. Wow!!! It rides great! So smooth! The only thing that was annoying me a bit was the front rack rat trap was vibrating. I got to see what I can do about that, hopefully it can be fixed.
Best part was the coaster brake worked so well!! Really easy to skid the tire if needed. It will feel a lot better on down hills for a lot more confidence it will stop.
While I had the Tiger out I took some photos in the sun. I love black paint and chrome! So classic! It reminds me of and old 60's Lincoln Continental! (Maybe there is a away to put rear suicide doors on the Tiger.....never mind...) For me personally the only way to make it better would be very subtle red pinstripe.
I love this stuff!!
One thing I want to try yet is to take another attempt at the chip on the front of the front fender in the white paint.
I also with this snow would go away because I am not good at taking photos with all the bright white around.
Check back soon for the beginning of the 3 speed Tiger!
With the nicer weather I was able to get more photos of Gilly's Tiger outside. I love that deep shine to the black paint!

I love this stuff!!
One thing I want to try yet is to take another attempt at the chip on the front of the front fender in the white paint.
I also with this snow would go away because I am not good at taking photos with all the bright white around.

With the nicer weather I was able to get more photos of Gilly's Tiger outside. I love that deep shine to the black paint!

So far, so good John! Gilly's black Tiger looks great! Can wait to cruise the city streets of Chicago on these bikes this coming season.

ReplyDeleteI sure wish you were in New York City. It's impossible to get work like this done around here for any price, let alone the low prices you charge.
