1986 Schwinn World Sport Restoration Bicycle After Restoration |
Kind of crazy but out of the 1000's and 1000's of restorations I have done I have never restored a Schwinn world Sport. This will be the first. I actually really don't know much about the World Sport but it does have a Cro-Moley steel frame, it has a nice crank and some very nice components. It also has some pretty nice wheels on it. Overall I am impressed with the world sport. This world sport is in somewhat rough starting shape but should not be a problem at all.
The Schwinn World Sport will get a complete restoration along with new cables, new cable housings, new bearings, new handlebar tape, new brake pads and new tires. I really like the gun metal color of the World Sport and the gold decal accents. I can't wait to see the results of the restoration and to give the World Sport a test ride.

I stripped the frame of all of the components. With the frame bare I see a few chips and scratches and a few bad spots on the seat stays and chain stays. Those few bad spots will get filled later. Even with those few bad spots I think the frame will polished beautifully, I think there is a real gem under the dirt and dullness.
I gave the frame a deep cleaning and then started working through all the polishing grits. The frame cleaned great and after polishing the frame is quite stunning. The clear goat polished perfectly, to a glass finish that the florescent lights do not do justice too. Under that polished clear coat the gun metal color comes to life with just a enough metallic flake to really sparkle. I love this stuff!!

The headset and bottom bracket where in okay starting shape. The grease was very hard and nasty. I cleaned all the pieces in the crock pot and polished the headset and bottom bracket on the polishing wheels. I installed new bearings and grease. The headset looks great polished and spins great and same for the bottom bracket. They polished chrome looks awesome next to the polished gun metal paint!

The crank is a very nice Sugino VP. I broke down the crank and cleaned all the pieces. I then started work on the polishing wheels. The crank polished very nice and look fantastic installed.

I have not come across these shift levers very often but I like them a lot. They look descent and they function really really nice. They are ratcheted and have a great easy feel. Installed they look nice with all the other polished pieces.

The drive train is interesting on the World Sport. The derailleurs are Shimano Light Action which where one of the early index shifting systems but the shift levers are not indexed. The derailleurs are very nice derailleurs even if they are not indexed.
I broke down the derailleurs and started the cleaning. The derailleurs took a lot of elbow grease to get clean, the dirt and grease was very stubborn. I then polished the derailleurs and lubricated all the appropriate areas. The derailleurs turned out extremely nice and look great installed. I really love it.

I like the slightly "droopy" shape of the brake calipers. The calipers where rough to start. I ran all the pieces through a parts cleaner with very strong degreaser and then through the sonic cleaner many times. With the pieces cleaned I started the polishing. It took a while but the brake calipers polished beautifully! Overall I am super happy with the brake calipers and with new brake pads they work great. Some how I missed a few photos of the brake calipers.

The seat post and saddle are in good shape. I cleaned all the pieces and polished out the chrome. The seat post looks good installed.

The wheels are very nice. I did not notice until I got quite a bit into the wheels that they are miss matched wheels. I believe the front wheel is a replacement but it is a very good matched replacement. I broke down the wheels and cleaned all the pieces. the grease was nasty and hard and the wheels both had a clunk inside from the grease and bearings. I polished all the pieces and installed new bearings and grease. The wheels now spin great, no more clunk. With the wheels almost complete I installed the new gum wall tires. The wheels look great installed with the tires and the polished paint. I am really happy.

Time to wire the World Sport. I chose a more original gray cable housing compared to the darker Ice Gray. I figured the original gray would go better with the gun metal color, I think it does. I also installed new black handlebar tape. The World Sport looks great with the handlebar tape and cables complete.

I mixed up a touch up paint to touch up some of the bigger chips with white primer showing through. The gray colors are not easy to match. I got fairly close but the main purpose was to cover up the white primer that stood out like a soar thumb and to protect the metal frame. I am very happy with the World Sport complete. It rides much much nicer then I was expecting but I don't now why I didn't think it would ride good? It looks great and has some very nice components mixed in. I like the world sport a lot!

Outdoors is where the Schwinn World Sport really shines. The color just shines, such a deep paint. The cable housings accent the gun metal color so nice. The bright work just pops and best of all the World Sport rides great! How does it get better.

I'm so excited I can barely type! I have a 1986 World Tourist (girls) which I want to restore! It's like brand new now but I'm grinding the miles on. Over 2 years of riding 20-30 miles every other day. I've had new tires, cables, adjusted, lubed, but no rebuild. I have no tools, bike stand or area to do it in where I live but I'd love to have it repainted and the whole works. Your photos are great. The color is Warm Silver (from Schwinn) and I'd like to keep it except make it more sparkly or use a sparkle silver paint. I need to read this better now. Lol! I was thinking of lighter wheels, maybe disc brakes, but keeping everything else like it is. I have 10 speeds and only the shifting cable is special (solid.) I want to keep the fenders...someone should make light plastic fenders that size. Anyway, I'm writing a book here. My bike rides like a dream and I like how it shifts. Although it's heavy it's a good ride. Of course, you live in Illinois. Perhaps we could just blab about it. Do you still have the bike? The World is similar to the World Tourist except a 10 speed. ReplyDeleteYour pictures are wonderful and I'll be able to use them to identify things but you did such a good job and kept the original paint!! Ever travel to CA? Lol! If I had a garage I'd talk you into coming here for a few weeks to see the area and do my bike. In the meantime, I need to find someone to do it here who will be honest for a good price. The store I originally got it from is a great place but they would charge me an arm and a leg. They don't sell Schwinn anymore it's all Giant. (Who bought Schwinn I think.) What a great job you did and what a great article. That bike is gorgeous. Did the World have the no-shift spinning chain that mine does?
