Thomas's 1977 Schwinn Le Tour III Restoration Bicycle After Restoration |
The Le Tour frame was built by Panasonic in Japan. The frames where very well made with a nice geometry. Built up the Le Tours are wonderful riding bicycles with lots of versatility built in. The Le Tour leans more to a sport touring bike and rides so nice.
Thomas's idea is for a Schwinn Le Tour in the famous Schwinn orange color with a nice restoration done. the Orange color is a extremely popular color and they are hard to come by here in the Chicago area, especially in okay starting condition.
Thomas is on the east coast and I am between Milwaukee and Chicago so we thought the best way was to find a candidate for restoration here in my area. It took sometime to find the correct size and a descent starting condition but I eventually found one on my way to Upper Michigan to visit family. It took a little detour to Wisconsin Rapids but it was a beautiful drive through rural Wisconsin. Wisconsin and Upper Michigan are my home areas and I love it.
The orange Schwinn Le Tour III is in descent starting shape. I think the paint is in really good shape under the dirt and dullness. The components seem to be in good shape and should restore and polish beautifully. The saddle is in great shape for its age. The Le Tour will receive a total restoration along with new bearings, handlebar tape, brake pads, tire tubes, new tires, all new cables and cable housings. I can't wait to see the results.

I stripped the frame of the components and found the frame to be in good shape. There is one pretty big scratch and chip in the paint on the top of the down tube. After polishing I will clean and fill the scratch and chip with clear to protect it from the environment. The frame is pretty dull and does have some very tough tar and some staining here and there but it should all polish away very nice with a few grits of polishing compound.

I gave the frame and fork a deep cleaning, removed the tar and then started working through the polishing compounds. The frame and fork polished beautifully!! I could not be happier with the frame paint. The orange really came back nicely to an even color with a very deep shine. I love it!!

I like the bottom bracket that seems to be on most of the orange colored Le Tours, they have black bearing cups that just look cool against the orange. The bottom bracket and headset are in descent starting shape. I soaked the pieces in the crock part and after cleaning I started polishing by hand on the black pieces and on the industrial polishers for the chrome pieces. The headset and bottom bracket polished beautiful and now spin just ad beautiful.
At this time I also cleaned and polished the shift levers as they are built into the headset. The shift levers polished very nicely and function great after lubricating. I have always liked the shift levers on the Le Tours, they are smaller then the Schwinn big stick levers but still work very nicely.

The stem is the very nice alloy "S" logo and the handlebars are a favorite of mine the way they flair out. The stem was in good shape and just took a little cleaning and polishing. The handlebars where a little rougher but no damage. I polished the handlebars and they turned out fantastic. Installed the stem and handlebars look great!

The brake levers are in pretty good starting shape, a good polishing and they will look fantastic. The gold accents on the brake levers are very cool. I cleaned the brake levers and then worked through the polishing grits on the industrial polishers. The brake levers turned out amazing and with the proper areas lubricated they function very smooth. I love this stuff!

The derailleurs are always very nice on the Le Tours. These are Schwinn Approved Le Tour derailleurs. The derailleurs have a lot of alloy and polished beautifully and are pretty light for any derailleurs. The derailleurs are also pretty bullet proof. I cleaned all the pieces and started the polishing. The derailleurs look amazing polished and with new grease and pivot points polished they function great too!! Awesome!!

The brakes are nice center pull brakes. Center pull brakes work very well compared to side pull brakes from the era and they look fantastic polished. I really like center pull brakes. I cleaned all the pieces and then polished the many many pieces. With all the pivot points greased and new brake pads installed the brake look great and work great. I love those polished brakes against the polished orange paint.

Yesterday was Wheel Wednesday, I restored twelve wheels yesterday, it turned out to be a long day. I have always liked the wheels Schwinn put on the early Le Tours, they are very well made wheels and I love the Schwinn high flange wheel hubs.
I broke down the wheel hubs and cleaned all the old hard grease out. With the hubs cleaned I started the polishing process. The hubs polished beautifully, I couldn't be happier with the hubs. I cleaned all the axle pieces and installed new bearings and grease.
The wheel rims where in descent starting shape with just a light bit of surface rust here and there. I worked through the rim polishing and the rims turned out amazing. Overall the wheels are amazing!! They look fantastic and spin amazing. I really really like the Le Tour wheels. Tires will be installed when chosen.
Today I cleaned the chain and freewheel and soaked the chain in oil. The freewheel was very dirty but with some cleaning and lubricating the freewheel really came back nice. I really like the small pie plate the Le Tour has and after a little cleaning and polishing it looks great. With the chain and freewheel installed the Le Tour looks like is can go somewhere now.
I posted the before photos above of the seat collar and seat post before but I am posting the before below too. The seat collar painted nicely and installed with the saddle cleaned and treated it looks great too. I really like this saddle a lot.
This week I installed Panaracer Pasela Tires. Tires that I like very much and have put many many miles on Panaracers. The Panaracers look fantastic installed and will supply a cushy, fast and durable ride.
Thomas has been using a red version of the Deda synthetic leather handlebar tape and has discovered why I like it so much also. The tape is soft but also has the perfect look for vintage bikes. I installed the black handlebar tape and it looks fantastic!! It really complements the orange paint very well!
Pedals take a beating and usually they are well to far gone. The Le Tours pedals are not perfect but they are not to bad to start with. I cleaned the pedals and then hand polished the pedals with chrome polish and brass wool. The pedals polished extremely well. I lubricated the pedals and they spin great.
That almost completes the Le Tour. I am working on cleaning and touching up the rack. I got to test ride the Le Tour today and it rides beautifully. It did take a good deal of road tuning to get just right but now it is beautifully tuned.
I cleaned and installed the Jim Blackburn black rack. I believe it is an original Blackburn rack since it says Jim Blackburn and not just Blackburn. I installed the rack with new hardware and the rack looks great. I then test road the Le Tour III again and it stayed in tune very well and rode very smooth and easy. I like this bike a lot! With the rack installed I took the final photos and the Le Tour is beautiful! And you know what they say about orange bikes, "They are the fastest!" I love orange bicycles.....

ReplyDeleteA beautiful job as always John. Love the color, I have always wanted an Orange bike, and you worked your magic on the paint. I built up a Le Tour III a few years ago for my sister in law and I agree the frame and component workmanship and details are fantastic on these Japanese built Schwinn's.
ReplyDeleteSharp looking ride. The saddle is a little odd, is it leather?
ReplyDeletei have the same bike
