I recently started this 1985 Miyata 610.  It belongs to Jose, he found it as it is.  The Miayta 610 will be changed slightly and overhauled.  Technically it is not a path racer being a 1 x 7 but it sure looks like one!

I think this Miyata 610 is really cool in this set up.  It has a Shimano 105 rear derailleur and crank, an old Shimano friction five speed shift lever, chopped handlebars, new Tektro cantilever brake levers and a strange set of wheels.

Jose found some really nice Shimano 105 wheels off of an old Miyata 914 that will replace the wheels.  New leather short handlebar grips will be installed and a general overhaul.

The Miyata 610 is very muddy so the before and after photos are a little extreme, the blue paint has a lot of chips and is dull but should come out nice, I will fill the chips with touch up paint to make the white primer under the blue chips to not stand out.

I broke the bicycle down tot he frame, the frame was very muddy and the paint is chipped some and dull.  The paint chips show the white primer under the blue, this will need to be filled so the white wont stand out.
The frame polished out pretty nice with a lot of elbow grease, I am happy with the results and really like this blue Miyata used, I have worked on a few before in this color.

I put the headset in the crock pot for a little bit and then polished it, it polished nice.  The bearings where very gritty from the mud so new grease has them turning smooth.

The handlebars where chopped, the cut was pretty rough and crooked and the two sides did not match.  I cut about a 1/16 of an inch of one side to clean up the cut and about a 1/4 of an inch on the other to make them even.  I really like the look of these handlebars, very cool!!

The Tektro cantilever brakes are pretty new but very dirty and they squeaked because there was rust forming on the brake studs, I do not think they where greased before installation.  The brakes cleaned up nice and a little hand polishing has them look great.

The crank was a little rough and has a paint finish on the arms.  The paint was pretty bad so I polished the paint of the crank arms.  The crank looks great with the crank arms polished to a high sheen.

The rear derailleur is a Shimano 105, it was muddy and gritty but after a good cleaning and flushing and lubrication it works very smooth.

Installed

The fenders are okay fenders.  They are plastic but the black finish fits the look good.  The fenders have also been shopped to give them more of a path racer look.

For now an older brown Brooks saddle is being installed, it fits the look of the Miyata perfectly and I like the Patina.

The wheels that where on the Miyata 610 where miss matched, Jose found some Shimano 105 wheels that someone took off of a Miyata 914, they where in perfect shape and will be pretty darn fast.  The old tires where reused, finding a match front tire will be attempted.

The last things to do was install the new leather handlebar grips, they are actually meant to go with twist grip shift levers but they fit perfect on the chopped handlebars.  New brake cables where installed and the bike tuned.  It shift very easy, when the rain stops I will test ride it.

I really like the results of the Miyata 610, I love the look and the simpleness of the 1 x 7 set up. The leather handlebar grips and Brooks saddle really go well with the chopped handlebars.  I think it is a good use of a bicycle that was not original.  I am think of building up a frame I have here with no components for myself.
