John's Bicycle Restorations: Miele Restoration - Canadian Cool!! - Yes Canadian!

Miele Bicycles where made in Canada from 1982 to 1996. The company was founded by Jim Miele who had immigrated from Italy. Miele made high quality bicycles in the Italian style. This is one of those Jim Miele frames. It is a beautiful frame that some one long ago pirated the original components from. Instead of going original components I will be replacing the components from a Dave Scott Centurion that someone sure did not take care of. The replacement components will be era correct Shimano 105, not the best possible but not the worst possible either.

The frame is just beautiful, I could really see the quality and the detail as I got to know the frame. We did have to track down an Italian thread bottom bracket which happened to be Dura Ace. The frame has a light splatter paint scheme from the early 1990's which I actually like being my young era and of course its orange!! I am a sucker for an orange bike!! Can't wait to ride the Miele!!

The frame I think is beautiful under just storage dirt and dullness. The chrome fork has seen better day but is still cool and I will do what I can to make it usable. Pretty typical Italian chrome on the fork.

To bad the Dave Scott Centurion bicycle was not taken care of, I really like these Centurions. The Centurion was left out in the rain by someone for a quite a while. The fork was also bent in but the components will come back nicely.

The frame polished beautifully! I couldn't be happier!! This is why I love this stuff!!

The fork chrome improved some, I didn't find any real problems other than the surface rust from sitting for a long time. It looks better and will be good.

The wheels where in pretty good shape, after some work they are beautiful. The Shimano 105 hubs and the Wobbler rims are a good match. New Tires and tubes and they are ready for some hard miles!

While we waited on the bottom bracket to arrive it was time to wire the Miele. I chose the light silver cable housing color to go with the orange paint. I like a lighter color to go with orange frames, I like the housing color to blend in with the orange. Although I also like lime green with orange I think the silver was the right choice.

The day I got to test ride the Miele it was 8 degree high and the roads still had spotty snow and ice. The 8 degrees was actually up from the -29 degree lows and -20 degree highs we had the week before where my car battery froze solid. I was dodging ice and snow spots while test riding the Miele. First impression?? very nimble and quick! Dodge the ice like nothing. I wish it wasn't so cold that I could have really worked the Miele but over all I wish the Miele was my bike!!

I really like the looks of the Miele, it has a refined look for the era, which that era had a nice refined look to it. I like the black accents and the orange very much. Like I said I wish this was my bike. Very Canadian cool!!

Nice work John, I like the red. My Miele is an 88 Elite in this fabulous pearl green with Suntour Sprint. It's my go to ride.

WOW!!!! I am so impressed. I have the same bike, only in purple, down in the basement. I haven't ridden it in 20+ years (I replaced it with a SEVEN) but now I'm inspired to restore it. It's in excellent condition, not a scratch on it, has the original Campy Athena and shouldn't be too hard to get back into riding condition! Thanks so much!
