This is Al's Schwinn Traveler step through in for restoration and a conversion. A conversion of these step through bicycles to upright handlebars complete transforms the ride and feel. The conversion still makes for a smooth and fast ride being the wheels and setup was designed for speed. With the handlebars it just makes it more comfortable.
The Traveler was in descent starting shape. The conversion, new tires and cables and a restoration and the Traveler will be looking like new.

The frame was definitely dull with a few rougher spots but after a good deep cleaning and some time with the polishing grits the frame looks amazing. In the photos the touch up paint has not been done yet.

All the components turned out beautiful with after disassembled and run through the crock pot, sonic cleaner and a good amount of time on the polishing wheels. I couldn't be happier with the results.

The Traveler need new handlebar grips, I was thinking shellac and cork but that I think wouldn't be the best look and feel. I search through the parts collection and found a set of original Schwinn Handlebar grips. They look perfect for the Traveler! And they feel pretty good too.

That completes the Schwinn Traveler. Tet riding it is very quick and nimble and comfortable. Best of all is the looks. I like how the grips accent the saddle but you still get the classic look of the gum walls. I love this stuff!!

I owned a blue example in a diamond frame from this era. Mine was Panasonic built, same equipment. Got several drivetrain upgrades, loved it, put over 40,000 miles on it.
