This is Jerry's Schwinn Volare. There is a little more to the story but that little more is going to wait a bit so I don't ruin anything.

The story of the Volare is that Jerry is restoring this Volare for his wife as a gift. She had quite an adventure on a Schwinn Voalre. This Volare is not her original Volare that she used on the adventure but maybe some of the soul of the original Volare an be transferred over to this Volare.

Jerry’s wife Lee Hansen went on a “little bicycle trip” from Cedar Rapids, Iowa
to Alaska with a college friend. During the summer of 1980, they traveled 4,200
miles over country roads, mountain ranges, and 1000 miles of gravel, sleeping
in a tent along the way. Lee made the trip on a Schwinn Volare borrowed from a
friend. The bike was outfitted with special gearing, a rare Dura-Ace Crane GS
derailleur and other accessories that Lee retained
after the trip. Inspired by recent interest in her trip and locating Lee’s “box
of parts” Jerry began a “second adventure” to find and restore a (this) tribute
Volare using as many of Lee’s Alaska Trip parts as possible. Lee will find the
bike under the Christmas Tree in just a few more days………………"

I love the Schwinn Volare, It's my personal favorite bike every made. There is a look to it that you don't see every day and it has first generation Dura Ace. I am a Dura Ace guy over a Campy guy probably mainly because the era I grew up in.
The Volare is a very cool bike all around. It is known as the Japanese Paramount. An attempt at making a Paramount with Japanese components at the time where most of Schwinn's lugged frames where being made my Panasonic in Japan. It is also one of the more rare Schwinns made and only made for two years.
The Volare is missing some of its original components. Jerry did a fantastic job of finding replacement components. The Volare is missing the original stem and handlebars, original brake levers, the original Dura Ace crank and the original Dura Ace wheels. Jerry found all the replacement components plus a replacement front derailleur because the original had been cracked in the bracket.
The Volare is going to receive a total restoration. Along with new tires, cables, bearings, handlebar tape and tubes. Jerry also had Waterford Cycles in Waterford Wisconsin repaint the frame and make decals. I could not match the orange exactly in my paint process. I am totally amazed by Waterford's work.

The original plan was to break the Volare down and see how far the original paint could come back and then apply new decals. When the frame was broken down some damage was found, the top tube had a dent in it and the top tube cable stops where broken off. With that damaged it was decided to bring the frame all the way back to know. Jerry brought the frame to Waterford Cycles.

I knew Waterford was going to do an amazing job at painting the frame but to see it in person after is just stunning. I so wish I could reproduce this orange in powder coat. "Indy Orange" made my Prismatic powders is kind of it but not close enough. The frame is like a sparkling jewel, the chrome polished like new, the decals are beautiful. It is just amazing!! I love it!

The headset is the original Dura Ace headset. The bottom bracket that was on the Volare was not the correct bottom bracket. The correct bottom bracket came with the replacement crank. I forgot to take a photo of the bottom bracket before but it was in good starting shape. I cleaned both the bottom bracket and headset and then worked through the polishing wheels. The bottom bracket cups where tricky to polish because I did not want to loose the brushed finish to them. Both the headset and bottom bracket turned out beautiful. I installed the headset with new bearings. I did not install the bottom bracket yet because I was one bearing short in my new bearings. New bearings are on the way. All the chrome around the headset and head tube is my favorite part and the headset spins perfectly!

The handlebars and stem was taken off another Schwinn from the era. The brake levers photoed in the first photo will not be used. The handlebars and stem are actually in fantastic shape under all that shed dust and dullness. I cleaned the stem and handlebars and then carefully worked through the polishing wheels. The stem and handlebars turned out amazing. I love it!!

The crank that was on the Volare was a cheap 1980's bike shop replacement crank. Jerry found an original Dura Ace crank in very good condition. I broke the crank down and found the hardware had what looked like car wheel bearing grease on the threads. Its good to put a little anti seize on the threads but the car grease is not the right choice.
With the crank broken down I find the polishing step very tricky on an original example in good condition. On a crank that is in bad condition I can just cut and polish it until it has a mirror finish but with a valuable crank you want to balance fixing small blemishes with keeping the original factory finish. I very very lightly worked through polishing and did a lot of hand polishing. The crank was in good condition to start but I think I was able to bring it up a few levels. Installed it looks amazing! I also installed the bottom b racket at this time.

One of my favorite pieces in a Dura Ace set is the bottom bracket cable stop. It has so much more character then a generic cable stop. I cleaned the cable stopped in the crock pot and then worked through the polishing wheels. The cable stop turned out great! Looks amazing installed!

The original Dura Ace front derailleur is not in to bad of condition until you open the clamp and you see a crack in the clamp arm. It is to bad that such a nice derailleur is broken.
Jerry found a very good condition replacement Dura Ace front Derailleur. I ran it through the sonic cleaner to get the little bit of dirt a sticky grease out of the nooks and tight spots. I then hand polished it to keep the original look. I flushed and lubricated the pivot points and it function super smooth like Dura Ace should. Installed it looks amazing!!

I laced the wheels with new spokes to the new old stock Dura Ace hubs and the new old stock Araya rims. The hubs and rims are just amazing!! It is amazing to see what the hubs and rims where like when they where new. I also love how high flange hubs look when laced, the crossovers are much higher up on the spokes. The wheels laced nicely and looks amazing installed! Best of all they spin perfect and forever.

There is quit a story to the Volare that I will finish out in about a week but part of it is this is a derailleur that is very important to the story. I have only seen one other Crane GS derailleur in person, this one is like new and the fact it has the original packaging is crazy. It makes sense though because it goes with the bigger geared freewheel below. Installed it is crazy beautiful! I love this stuff!

The silver braid color is what is very close to the original cable housings. New cables where installed along with new brake lever hoods. The silver looks so good with the new paint.

I wanted to put a very narrow tire on the Volare but the rims are a little wide for narrow tires. The narrow tire would flatten out and sit to low. Best choice in the slightly wider tire is the Panaracer 700 x 32 mm. A classic look and gum wall like the original. The Volare looks so good with the tires installed.

Jerry brought over a box of original parts that made the Alaska trip. In it where the Toe Clips. The toe clips would not work with the pedals that are on the Volare so we found some more era correct pedals to put them on. The pedals where very smooth to start, I mainly polished, cleaned and lubricated the pedals. The Alaska Toe Clips look great on the pedals. Installed the pedals look amazing!

I want to thank Jerry for involving me in this project. First of all the Volare is my personal all time favorite bicycle. Second it has such a great story and third its a gift. I didn't do a whole lot, mainly built the wheels, overhauled the components and did the assembly. Waterford stole the show with the paint job! The paint is amazing!! Some of the best I have ever seen!
The looks of the Volare are just amazing, the fresh color, the practically NOS components, the black hoods and handlebar tape and the Gum Wall Panaracers top it off. I love it!! And it has chrome stays and lugs which I love!
I know the Volare rides and will ride perfect and amazing, you can't beat first generation Dura Ace components!
I wish I could have gotten outdoor photos but the -5 and -10 degree stretch along with the snow cover did not allow that. So I hope the beauty of the Volare is captured in the drab dining room shots.
