This is the beginning of the restoration of Randy's 1984 Schwinn World Sport. I love this Schwinn blue! Amazingly, out of the thousands of bicycles I have restored, most before I even know anything about websites and blogs, this is only the second World Sport I have restored. The other one was just last fall.
I like the World Sport after restoring the fist one. I like the components Schwinn used on the world sport, the Suntour drive train makes for a great ride that is almost bullet proof in function.
Randy's World Sport has one heck of a history! Randy bought it new in 1984. In 1985 and 1986 it was his primary transportation while stationed in South Korea! (Thank you Randy!!) Randy also road the World Sport in a couple of century rides in New Mexico and Alabama. It has been hanging in the garage for sometime but now it time to get it rolling again! The history on a bicycle doesn't get any better then that!! That what I really love about this, all the great stories bicycles have!
The World Sport is a little rough right now but I see a beautiful bicycle in there just waiting to come back to life! The World Sport will get a complete restoration with saving the original paint. Along with saving the paint the World Sport will be getting new Panaracer tires, new tire tubes, all new bearings, new cables, new cable housings, new brake pads and a new saddle. I can't wait to see that blue paint polished and all the components shining!
The World Sport took a little accident at one point and the rear derailleur is pretty twisted up. It was the first thing I tried to straighten out but I could not get it straight enough. The rear derailleur is going to be replaced. Since the rear derailleur is going to be replaced I am going to replace the front derailleur too since it took a good deal of rust. Besides the rear derailleur being twisted the frame is very straight and in good shape so that is not a problem.
I can't wait to see the results and work on the World Sport with so much history!

I broke the World Sport down and found the frame to be in good shape. There are a lot of chips and scuffs but no rust which makes filling them a lot easier. With the chips and scuffs there are no real bad areas which is great. I love this blue!

I worked through the polishing grits and I am super happy with the results. The original blue came back to that deep metallic shine. My first attempt at mixing touch up paint I was not happy with so I am going to let that simmer for a day and mix another attempt. In the photos below the touch up paint and sealer wax has not been applied yet but wow that blue shines! Will be even better after touch up!! The bottom bracket really came out nice on the inside. I love this stuff!!

I have been working on the components for the World Sport but the wheels where drawing me in more then the components for now. I was concerned about the wheel rims and I was unable to wipe the dirt of the rims in a quick inspection. So I wanted to get to the wheels.
The wheels are slightly rough but they seemed to be all there mechanically. The dried on hard dirt on the rims and hubs was being stubborn. With some soaking and some elbow grease the dirt removed. The dirt did leave some etching in the rims. The rims are also have a very textured finish that is original. The textured finish and the etching left a dilemma. To highly polish the rims it would take a lot of aluminum off the rims. I decided that polishing the wheel hubs would be the way to go and then burnish the wheel rims to more of an original finish. The rims turned out great with a newly burnished finish.
The rest of the wheel areas restored beautifully. The spoke came out good, much better then they started. The hubs polished beautifully! The axle components came back very nice and with new grease and bearings the wheels spin for ever. As soon as the tires arrive they will be installed. I can't wait to see the fresh wheels installed to the frame!

The handlebars, stem and rear brake lever took some road rash at some point. The handlebars are fine form it. The stem has a little gauging that I filed off and shaped with a fine file. I also hand filed a little road rash off the brake lever. The stem polished beautifully and can no longer tell there ever was road rash. The brake levers polished beautifully but there is a little sign of road rash on the rear lever. Not much but just a little if you look close, I could not file it all away with out compromising structure. Overall I am thrilled with the results of the handlebars, stem and brake levers.

There also was some etching to the stem from that corrosive old dirt. That etching polished away very nicely.

The shift levers are nice Sun Tour levers. I like these levers, they shift very nice and very smooth. I flushed and cleaned the brake levers and then worked through the polishing wheels. With the levers polished I lubricated the levers and installed them. They look great and function very smooth and easy! I love this stuff!

Next I cleaned and polished the seat post and seat binder bolt. The seat post looked rough but after polishing it looks great installed.

Next I worked on the brake calipers. I broke the brake calipers down and found that they also had that etching dirt on them. Many things you can find in puddles on the road can etch aluminum. I guess that is a little scary to think about.
I cleaned all the pieces and worked through the polishing wheels. The pieces to the brake calipers polished amazingly, I am thrilled!! Installed the calipers look even more amazing next to the blue paint. Tune Ups have been so crazy this week that I blew through 30 pairs of brake pads. I will install new brake pads as soon as the new box of 100 get here. I think seeing the brake calipers installed is always my favorite part of a restoration! I also like the looks of Die-Comp 500's a lot when restored!

The crank was a little rough from the etching spots of the sand. I wish the crank would have broken down but its a pressed together crank. I soaked the crank to remove all the dirt and old grease and then worked through some polishing grits by hand. I am very happy how the crank turned out, a great deal of the etching as gone away and over all the crank looks very good. Installed it looks even better. I also installed the wheels at this time and they look great with everything else!

Next I wired the breaks while the new derailleurs soaked for cleaning. Randy chose gold metallic housings which I think look great! He was debating between gold and orange and I think the gold is the one!

We where looking through a couple rear derailleurs. I was trying to stay with Sun Tour because they where the best from this era. I found one that would have worked but then over the weekend I found a really nice Sun Tour Gt rear derailleur. The rear derailleur restored beautifully and will function great and be almost bullet proof. I love this stuff!
The front derailleur is a pretty basic Sun Tour derailleur but that is all you need for a friction shift front derailleur. The front derailleur also restored beautiful and looks great installed!

The new freewheel came yesterday afternoon. I worked hard on the original freewheel but it is very rough and if it works now with a new chain it probably won't work for long. Below in the photo is the new freewheel and the old after work has been done to it.

The down tube cable guide for the derailleur cables was very rough and rusted. I looked through the parts collection and found a nice guide that was the same. You may not notice the new guide on the World Sport but you sure would notice a rough one.

With the freewheel, chain and cable guide installed it is time to wire the derailleurs. I really like that gold cable housing, it really compliments the World Sport nicely!

Time to install the new handlebar tape. I tried installing brake lever hoods and keep the upright brake handles but there just was no room to fit them, they rubbed and jammed up in between. The new Cinelli black handlebar tape look great installed!

The last thing I did today was install the new saddle. The seat color is photoed below cleaned and polished. The new saddle is an Avenir 200 mountain bike saddle. It says mountain bike but its much narrower then a mountain bike saddle but slightly wider then a road bike saddle. The slightly wider saddle is very nice for these Schwinns as the geometry is a little more upright. The more upright the geometry is the wider the saddle should be. The saddle looks great installed!

Today I went through all the pedals and found some that are pretty close to the originals. I cleaned and polished the pedals and gave them a good lubricating. They spin very tight and smooth.

Today I also changed the handlebar tape over. I mixed up two different handlebar tapes for two different bikes. The synthetic black leather tape goes on the World Sport. I think it is a great look for the World Sport! A good combination of today's technology with the look of the era.

I test road the World Sport and it needed some minor adjustments. The wheels needed a tweak in the truing stand which is often needed when wheels have been massaged so much to get back to true. The shifting was spot on right from the start, very easy and smooth shifting. The new freewheel and chain have a big part in the great shifting. I also needed to adjust the brakes a bit but now they are very crisp and stops good. The ride is very nice! The World Sport feels very smooth and very tight! By tight I mean it feels almost new, you feel no wear that you would before, it feels tight and new. The World Sport is also very comfortable! Very Comfortable even for me being about 3 inches to small for me.
For how nice the World Sport rides the looks may be even better. I matched a pearl blue mix for touch up paint pretty good. The black saddle and handlebar tape give it a mean look and the gold cable housings bring it all together. Even the yellow Panaracer Pasela logo on the tires accent the World Sport perfectly! I am thrilled with the results!

I just got the exeact same bike. Just wanta know what i really have.
DeleteI have a 1983 World Sport in the same color that I bought new and have had in basement storage since 1993 with 3050 miles on it.
ReplyDeleteI just put new tires, tubes, and rubber rim lining on it today....I need to find a new speedometer cable for the original Schwinn approved speedometer as the tip of the cable snapped off as I was reinstalling the cable into the speedo wheel hubdrive assembly.
My plans are to use it on several hiking/biking trails here in Pennsylvania.
