Today I started work on a 1977-79 Fuji Gran Tourer Mixte that I have had in the shop since the summer. I will be converting the Fuji Gran Tourer to a city bike with upright handlebars to make it a more useful bicycle. I also think a mixte proportions are off with drop handlebars but perfect proportions with city or sway back handlebars. A few details that struck me when I saw the Fuji over the summer and decided to purchase it is the Fuji stamp on the stem, the Fuji stamp on the crank and the green color, I like the green a lot and I really don't like green bikes. I think the green is different from the typical green and that is why I like it.
The Fuji Mixte is not in great starting condition so it will take some work but the paint is in good condition under all the dirt and dullness. The Fuji Gran Tourer Mixte will recieve a complete restoration along with new city handlebars, new Velo Orange city brake levers, new cork handlebar grips, new bearings, all new cables and cable housings and new tire and tubes. I want to test the saddle, it is in good shape and I really like the Fuji decal on the back of it but it will have to pass the restoration and comfort tests.
The Fuji will be going yup for sale when its complete, I recently finished a conversion of an Orange Schwinn Le Tour II mixte and I am curious to test ride it against the Schwinn. I am a fan of Fuji bicycles from the 1970's, they did a lot of nice things for the time. I also think a mixte bicycle with city handlebars is one of the most useful all around types of bicycles and this Fuji will be great for someone out there.

The frame is in better shape then I thought with the components stripped from the it. There are a few scratches and scuffs but not bad, I am not sure how easy it will be to mix a touch up paint for this green so we will see if the the touch up will be green or clear.

I really had to deep clean the paint, the dirt on it was very very stubborn, after cleaning I started polishing. I worked through a few grits of polishing compound and some really nice results slowly emerged. The first grit was very course to work through some staining and roughness but in the end the frame polished beautiful, the green has really grown on me, I like it a lot. I also really like the gold lug outline on the head tube lugs.

Headset & bottom bracket are in the crock pot soaking.
The headset & bottom bracket cleaned very nicely in the crock pot. After cleaning I polished the pieces on the power polisher and they turned out very nice. New bearings in the old bearing cages and new grease and both the headset & bottom bracket spin super smooth.

I am extremely proud and extremely happy with the results of the shift levers. When I first saw the Fuji I just assumed I would have to replace the shift levers, they where very rough, gritty and looked very rough. I exploded the shift levers and with a lot of elbow greasy into cleaning. I worked through the polishing grits and assembled the levers with all the correct areas greased.
Again, I am extremely proud of the results, the shift levers look amazing and function perfect, they could not have turned out any better, I love it.

I really like the crank for the Fuji Gran Tourer. I love the Fuji stamp in the crank arms. This crank is a lot like a Schwinn Le Tour crank in the fact that it does not work well to power polish it so most of the polishing is done by hand.
I cleaned the components to the crank and hand polished the crank arms and chain rings and then polished the chain ring bolts and hardware on the power polisher. I think the crank really turned out nice, I am thinking of maybe filling the Fuji stamp with black paint but not sure yet.
Some how I forgot to take a photo of the crank installed so in photos below for other components it might show up installed. The crank does look great installed!

I prefer center pull brakes from the era of the Fuji over side pull brakes from the same era. The center pull brakes look so much better and work so much better. I disassembled the brake calipers and had to do a lot of cleaning of very stubborn dried on grime. When the pieces where finally clean the polishing turned out great. I really like the looks of center pull brakes when they are polished out. I installed new brake pads and lubricated all the correct points during assembly. The calipers look fantastic installed, I love the look!!

I really like the set of Sun Tour derailleurs that are on the Fuji Gran Tourer. They are bullet proof in their function and restore beautifully. I disassembled the derailleurs and then did a lot of cleaning and polishing. Both derailleurs polished and assembled beautifully. The rear derailleur looks just beautiful, like a functional jewel. Both derailleurs look fantastic against the polished green paint!

The seat post is in good shape, just dirty and dull, the saddle is very interesting, I like the Fuji logo on the back of the saddle very much. I am hoping the saddle restores nicely and is comfortable enough to use.
I polished the seat post, seat binder bolt and seat coupling, all polished very nicely. For now I am just installing the seat post.

Last thing for the main body components is the down tube cable stop for the derailleur cables. The cable stop was in good shape just took some polishing and installed looks great against the green paint.

The wheels are in a little bit of a rough starting shape but that should be no problem. I disassembled the wheel hubs and started the cleaning of the very stubborn grease and dirt. The polishing went very well and the wheel hubs and wheel rims look great. I cleaned the spokes and also cleaned the axle components and all turned out great. The wheels really turned out fantastic and installed to the frame they look even better. I thought the new tires where suppose to be here yesterday but when ever they arrive I will install them right away.

The handlebars showed up, I like the shape of these handlebars a lot an are the ones I use a lot. I also installed the new Velo Orange city brake levers, they are just like the classic brake levers with a slightly more ergonomic feel.
The handlebars and brake levers look great installed, they completely transform the bike from the mixte drop bar look.

I thought about leather handlebar grips but I really just like shellacked cork the best. I installed the cork handlebar grips but still need to shellac the grips. I am debating between natural and amber shellac.

The new saddle came. I have not used this saddle before but it is what I was looking for with the brown leather look and a comfort style. I wish it did not have those big white letters on the rear quarter but that okay. I installed the saddle and it looks good on the Fuji.

With the new saddle installed the last thing to do for the Fuji Gran Tourer is to shellac the cork handlebar grips. I think shellacked cork handlebar grips are my favorite, they have such a nice classic look that goes so well with a city bike. I masked off areas and applied 6-7 coats of shellac. The grips look great!

I stand tuned the Fuji Gran Tourer and it stand tuned easily. I would like to test ride the Fuji but at the time of these photos it is 8 degrees out with a strong wind. I will test ride the Fuji when I close down shop this afternoon because I see tomorrows high will be -1.
The Fuji Gran Tourer turned out fantastic! It really has such a nice classic look. The green paint shines, the chrome and alloy pops and the cork, leather and gum wall bring it all together. The Fuji Gran Tourer will make a great bike for someone to cruise the neighborhood with friends and family, an afternoon ride to the coffee shop or errands or just an all day lazy exploring ride. The conversion to a city bicycle completely transforms the Fuji, what a beautiful bicycle!
