Bicycle After Restoration

This week I have started Jared's 1984 Schwinn World restoration.  I restored and converted to city handlebars a Schwinn for Jared's wife Sarah lat Spring.  Sara's Schwinn turned out very nice and can be seen by clicking here. 

Jared's world is going to get a restoration plus we are going to convert it to more upright handlebars.  Not city handle bars but riser handlebars.  With the conversion new brake levers and handlebar grips will be installed. Jared's World is in pretty descent starting shape.  The paint looks to be in okay starting shape with only a few chips and scuffs, I think it will polish out nicely.  The World will be getting all new cables, new cable housings, new bearings and brake pads.  The World will also receive new tires, saddle, brake levers, riser handlebars, grips and tubes.

I like the mid 1980's Schwinn's a lot.  I think the conversion will go very well with the World and look great!  I can't wait to ride it!

With the World broken down to the frame I find the paint to be in fairly descent condition.  There are some chips, scuffs and cable rubs but over all not to bad.  I think the paint will polish very nice.

I gave the frame a good cleaning and then started working through the polishing grits.  I started with a medium grit but then stepped back to a more course grit. The scuffs polished away very nicely.  The frosty blue paint has a lot more depth then I was expecting.   The photos don't do justice to how nicely the paint polished.  The frosty blue paint doesn't seem to want to photograph as nice as in person.  I love the black and red head badge against the frosty blue paint! I am very happy with the polishing of the paint!  I am trying to mix a descent paint match for the paint chips.  It is a hard color to match so if I can't get a good match I will added a little bit of clear over the chips.  Photos below do not have paint chips filled yet.

The components have been broken down and polished.  Monday starts assembly so check back soon!

Besides old grease and some grime the headset and bottom bracket are in good starting shape.  I ran the pieces through the crock pot to clean them and then worked through the polishing wheels.  The headset and bottom bracket pieces polished very nice.  New bearings and grease and both the headset and bottom bracket spin perfectly and look great!

The Schwinn World is being converted to more upright handlebars.  That will require new brake levers also.  The stem is going to be kept.  the stem was a little stuck in the fork tube but with a big rubber mallet and a few precision strikes the stem broke free.  I then worked through the polishing wheels and the stem turned out great!  It looks really good installed with the polished headset and paint.  The new handlebars are way behind on shipping.  They where suppose to be here Friday. Tracking number says they just arrived in Gurnee about 20 minutes ago.  So I guess they will be here this afternoon today Wednesday.

 The shift levers where in descent starting shape, just a little gritty and dull.  I flushed the levers and lubricated them and they function very smooth now.  After some work on the polishing wheels they look great too!

 The seat post is a little gritty and dirty but not bad at all.  The new saddle will be installed below.  The new saddle is a little wider for the new more upright handle position.  The seat post and couplers polished beautifully!

I like the droopy shape of the brake calipers a lot.  I broke the calipers down and worked through the polishing wheels.  The calipers polished beautifully.  Installed with new brake pads the calipers look fantastic!  I love this stuff!

 I like the derailleurs a lot on the World.  They are not highest end derailleurs but they are bullet proof and look great polished.  I broke the derailleurs down and cleaned all the pieces.  With the pieces cleaned they where worked through the polishing wheels.  Complete the derailleurs look amazing!  I could not be happier with the results!

 The crank is a riveted version so I can not break it down.  I polished the crank arms on the polishing wheels and then a lot of hand work.  The crank turned out beautifully!  I love it!

One of my favorite parts of a restoration is cleaning and polishing the cable guides.  They look so good installed when they have been polished and really make a restoration.

Main Body Complete
The wheels are in good starting shape.  Mainly a lot of old dirt and grease.  The hubs where definitely ready for a rebuild with all that old sticky grease.  New bearings and grease will have the wheels spinning super smooth.  I broke the wheels down and cleaned everything.  With everything cleaned I started the polishing.  The wheels polished beautifully!  The wheel hubs look fantastic and the rims are amazing!  New Panaracer tires where installed.  The wheels look fantastic complete!

 The new saddle is installed.  I a slightly wider saddle for the new upright riding position.  As you sit more upright the wider the saddle you need for comfort.  Conversely the more tucked over the riding position the narrower the saddle should be.  The new saddle looks great installed.

Well if the handlebars finally show up today as the tacking number says the World will be completed today!  Check back soon!

The handlebars showed up and I installed the handlebars.  The handlebars are at there full width for now.  About two inches can be cut off each end in the future if they are wanted to be a bit narrower. For now they will be the full length until Jared can decide how he wants them.  Can't add handlebars back on.  The handlebars look great installed and with that polished stem!

Next to be isntalled are the new VO brake levers and cork grips.  I like the VO brake levers a lot, they are just like the classic Whienmanns but with a slight bit more shape.  Of course I love shellacked cork grips!  I put about 6 coats of amber shellac on the grips.  they look great complete!

I forgot to take photos of the cables and cable housings being installed and the chain being installed. I chose the Ice Gray cable housings, they are very close to the original color and just look great with the blue color.

Since the final photos below there have been some changes with the tires.  During test rides there was a major flat spot on the tires.  I tired different Panaracers and it was the same.  I tried every 27 inch tire I have on hand new and old and they all had flat spot.  The rims are dead straight and perfect round.  It made no sense.  I think its the rim, they seem to be slightly different sized then the 630 ISO.  Also the rims are not hooked and most all 27 inch tires are now for hooked rims.  I put basic Kenda gum wall tires and they fit very nicely.  I think because they are thicker and don't have the little catch area for hooked rims.  If other style tires are wanted in the future we can replace the rims.

With the tire part being fixed the World rides great!  I love the feel of the riser handlebars, it makes the World a very nimble bike!  The ride is also surprisingly fast, I did not expect it to be so fast but I think the handlebars actually make for a very fast riding position.

Just as good as the ride is how the looks turned out.  The paint polished beautifully, the frosted blue color is quickly becoming a favorite!  I really like how the grips, saddle and gum walls compliment everything.  I really like this bike!  Makes me want to put some riser bars on my fixed gear!
