Bill recently purchased the Travelers from his brother in-law who bought the bikes new in 1976, very cool to keep them in the family! Miles wise I don't think the Travelers have seen a lot. Besides the dings and scraps from a garage, some old dirt and dullness and rotted soft goods I think the bikes are in fantastic condition.
What is also cool is Bill grew up across from the Schwinn Factory here in Chicago. Some years ago I did a bike race/randonneur/brevet (Something like one anyways) that looped past the old factory, it was cool to ride by.
The Travelers are going to receive a total restoration along with bring the original paint back, new tire and tubes, new cable, cable housings, brake pads and bearings. Both bikes will receive a new reproduction original seat. The male version will be converted to upright city handlebars like the step through version. I believe new pedals also. I can't wait to see the results, I think there are some stunning bikes under the dullness and years!
I have tried to handle bike pairs in different ways when writing up posts and that has not always worked the best. I am going to try it again here but since both bikes are being done together at the same time I think the flow will be better.
From here on I will refer to the male bike as standard and the female bike as step through. They where marketed as male and female but that is not exactly how the styles are purposed so I don't like the terms boy and girls bikes. They are standard and step through.

Standard Schwinn Traveler
I will start with the Standard Traveler's before photos first. The standard Traveler is in good starting shape. Mainly a lot of typical garage wear and tear and old dirt and grime.

With the frame stripped of the components I see some paint chips and scrapes. I think I can mix a good touch up paint so that won't be a big problem. Some old stuck dirt and dirt stains are here and there but that should polish away. Overall the frame is in great starting condition!

I gave the frame a good cleaning and started the polishing process. I started with a pretty fine polish but then stepped back a few coarser grits. I was surprised to need to go courser. After working through the polishing grits the frame is stunning! The red pearl shines so nice and so deep! I couldn't be happier with the paint!! I need to get a slightly darker red to mix with the red touch up paint I have so the touch up paint will come later along with a sealer wax after touch up. I love this stuff!!
I miss my red Varsity after polishing that red paint! But then my red Varsity was made for someone 5'-5" and I am 6'-4".
The chrome on the fork took some time and work but after the chrome is amazing! The chrome fork crown cap turned out perfect! I love the chrome and red!

Step Through Schwinn Traveler
I know I said I wasn't going to call the Travelers boy and girl bikes but with the next statement I am going to break that. Girls always took way better care of their bikes!! I wish I could find a lot of the bikes I love that was owned by a girl.
The step through is in a little better shape then the standard Traveler is. That doesn't really matter in the end because they will both look fantastic.

I broke the step through down to the frame and found the frame to be in about the same condition as the standard version minus a few chips and scraps. Basically the same storage dirt, grime and dullness. Overall in very good starting shape!

I worked through the polishing grits on the step through frame and it turned out amazing! The red is so deep and shines so nice. A few white paint scuffs polished out. Amazing!! Both frames really polished amazing! I love this stuff!

Standard Schwinn Traveler
Today was wheel morning for the Schwinn Travelers. I started with the standard frame Traveler first. Same wheels on each bicycle. The Standard frame Traveler wheels where just a little rougher then the step through frame wheels. I broke the wheel hubs down and found almost no use at all on the bearing cones. The bearing grease was nasty though. I cleaned the hubs and got on with the polishing. The wheel hubs polished very nice, I am very happy with the polishing of the hubs.
The wheel rims had a few rough spots but after polishing the rims look fantastic! Almost new like! I packed new bearings in new grease and assembled the hubs. The wheels spin very very nice. I did have to fix a bend in the rear axle however. It was quite a bend. I was able to get it very close to straight. The rear wheel spins great now but still will need to test ride it to make sure the bend came out enough.
Over all I am thrilled with how the wheels turned out!

Step Through Schwinn Traveler
The step through Traveler wheels where in slightly better shape. There was no bent axles. I broke the wheel hubs down and did the cleaning and polishing. The wheel hubs and rims polished just as nice as the standard Traveler version. With new bearings and grease the wheels spun for ever on the wheel stand. Over all I am very happy with the results of the wheels on the step through Traveler. I love this stuff!

Standard Schwinn Traveler
I started with the headset. The grease in the headset was very hard and nasty. I cleaned all the pieces through the crock pot and then worked through the polishing wheels. The headset polished very nice. The shift levers are part of the headset so I worked on those at the same time. I cleaned the levers, polished each piece out and then lubricated all the appropriate areas. The shift levers turned out fantastic, very smooth. With new bearings and grease the headset spins great! I am happy with the results.

The original drop handlebars where pretty badly bent but that is okay because they are getting replaced with city style handlebars. I am waiting on the handlebars to arrive but I can still install the stem. The stem is the classic "S" logo stem. I like this stem a lot. Polished and installed it looks great!

Next in line was the seat post and seat binder bolt. For a while Schwinn used a metal shim with their seat post. It is annoying because they did not hold up well. I cleaned the shim and polished. It did not polish the best but the top rim polished nice and that is the important part because that is the part that is visible. I am happy with he looks of the seat post, binder bolt and shim.

Pieces that are not always noticed but really make a restoration when look their best are the cable brackets. You sure would notice if they where not restored. The cable brackets polished very nice and look fantastic installed. I love this stuff!

I like the brake calipers, they are a little rough but they will restore beautifully. I broke them down, cleaned all the pieces and worked through the polishing wheels. I lubricated all the shims and pivot points during assembly. Installed the calipers look fantastic!! And they function very smooth!

Derailleurs are next. The Le Tour Shimano derailleurs work very well, they are practically bullet proof and when restored and polished look great, can't go wrong with these! I broke down the derailleurs, cleaned all the old grime off in the crock pot and sonic cleaners. With the pieces cleaned I worked through the polishing wheels and assembled the derailleurs while lubricating all the appropriate areas.

The crank is the chrome one piece Schwinn crank. It is a little dangerous to polish crank pieces like this on the polishing wheels with all the chain teeth. They get caught in the wheels very easy. You have one chain wheel stick in your shoulder from being whipped around and you find a different way to restore chain rings! The chain ring bolts are polished on the polishing wheels all the rest is done with a lot of hand work. The crank polished pretty good. There is a little bit of small flecks of chrome damage here and there, I think from maybe going through a puddle with something nasty in it.
The bottom bracket pieces cleaned in the crock pot and then where polished on the polishing wheels. The bottom bracket polished nicely. New bearings where packed and the crank installed. The crank spins great and looks great too!

The chain on the standard version of the Traveler was to far gone to save. I tried hard but it was just to stiff and grind after. I replaced the chain with a new chain. It will be good to go for a good amount of years.

Bill was able to find some pretty nice reproduction mattress saddle. Will be much more comfortable then the original saddle, especially with city handlebars. Looks great installed!

The next few things kind of all happened at once. It was time to wire the bike. I think the light silver that is very close to the original color housings is the way to go. The color looks great with the red!
I also installed some handlebars I have around so I can finish brake cables and test the Traveler. I am hoping the handlebars get here soon.
Bill found some gold dot brake levers to match the step through bike. I gave them a cleaning and a good polishing and lubricating. They look great and function great!

The pedals are in good starting shape except for one broken reflector. I cleaned and flushed the pedals and lubricated the bearings. With the pedals cleaned and working well I polished the pedals. The pedals polished very nice and spin great.
I know I must have a reflector around that will fit in the pedal, I have looked all morning but nothing yet. I know I have one around here somewhere, when I find one I will install it.

When assembled and moving around the Traveler didn't feel as heavy as I thought it would. I decided to weigh it. 32 pounds 12 ounces, not to bad really when you consider how heavy the one piece crank is and how heavy the freewheel is. I am impressed.

That just about completes the standard version of the Traveler. The weather is horrible right now with side ways rain and 60 mph gusts so I don't think I will be test riding now. The touch up paint was done this morning and looks great! The slight metallic was a little difficult to get right but it is close and makes a world of difference!
Step Through Schwinn Traveler
The step through assemble process went pretty much the same as the standard version.
I started with the headset. The headset was dirty and dull with old grease. The headset cleaned up great in the crock pot and after polishing looks fantastic with the polished red paint. New bearings and grease and the headset spins great!
The shift levers also restored beautifully! I really like how they feel when shifting and the black grips with the polished alloy, very cool! I love this stuff!

The same derailleurs as the other Traveler. The bullet proof and great functioning Le Tour model. You can see a rust line across the front derailleur, that is from the derailleur being slight off tuned and the crank chain guard rubbing against it.
I broke down the derailleurs and cleaned all the pieces and worked through the polishing wheels. The derailleurs polished fantastic and with all the areas lubricated they work fantastic. I am very pleased with the derailleur results!

The crank was the same hand work process as the other. This crank also had a little bit of chrome damage but overall looks great! The bottom bracket pieces where cleaned and polished and with new bearings and grease the crank spins great! Over all I am happy with the crank, I am really loving the red paint with all the restored components.

The same reproduction seat is going on the step through. I think it looks great installed! I kind of like the black springs compared to the chrome springs because those chrome spring don't hold up well and are hard to clean and restore.

Next it is time to wire the step through Traveler. This is the step in a restoration that I get excited for the completion of the restoration. It is when the bicycles really starts looking complete. I love the new cable housings with the red paint!

The pedals are cool rubber block with metal pedals. A lot of character. I cleaned the pedals and flushed and lubricated the bearings. The pedals spin great! No matter how much I polished the metal they would just take on a brushed metal look. I have never come across this. I like the look, I would just like to know why.

One of the last things to do is install the front deflector. I think this reflector is one of the best Schwinn ever made. The round reflector is not to big like the big rectangle solar panel Schwinn reflector. The reflector is also not to small. I also really like the bracket they used to install the reflector. Schwinn really made a well thought out reflector here.

I did the touch up paint this morning and it makes a world of difference. If you get up close and look for the touch up paint it will be a little different but overall pretty good.

Today I button up a few last things on the travelers.
First was I installed the wheel reflectors. The wheel reflectors are in great shape, especially since wheel reflectors get easily broken and just plane removed and lost. It is very cool the Travelers still have the wheel reflectors!

Weather was good today so I got to test ride the Travelers and road tune them. The Travelers road fantastic. The red paint reminded me though whole time through the build of my old Varsity. The Travelers sure don't ride like the Varsity witch was heavy and a beast. The Travelers ride very smooth. The shifting is fantastic, very easy. Whats nice about the shifting compared to the Varsity is the shifting is very easy and the shift throws are very small and light.
The upright handlebars are very comfortable, they make quite a change from the drop handlebars on the standard version. The step through is a very comfortable bike that is faster then you would expect.
I think the best part of the Travelers is how they look. The polished read paint is beautifully! All the polished chrome against the red is even better. The wheels are in fantastic condition and it shows. The black handlebar grips with the reproduction black saddle brings it all together. And best of all the Travelers are a pair!
