Greg's Copper Schwinn Continental Restoration Bicycle After Restoration |
I like the Schwinn Continental, to a kid back in the 80's who had a hand me down Varsity from my aunt the Continental was miles above the Varsity. Don't get me wrong, I loved that red Varsity and I could get that thing flying. But the Continental came with a lot of upgrades like aluminum handlebars, aluminum stem, better pedals, an aluminum seat post and of course center pull brakes that actually worked.
Greg's Continental is in okay starting condition, there are a few rough spots and a few very good spots. For Greg's Continental I am going to bring the paint back as far is it will and then do a full restoration. The tires are good on the Continental but it will receive new bearings, new cables, new cable housings, new brake pads and new handlebar tape.
The Continental used two different stems, one was more round with the "S" logo stamped in a circle. The other stem is like the one on Greg's Continental, the "S" logo inside this a cut out bead or groove, very cool detail.
I think the copper color of the Continental is really going to stand out after polishing, I can't wait to see the results and see the copper color shine out in the sun on the road!

I broke the Continental down to the frame. The frame paint has some rough areas but over all the paint is fairly descent. Some chips and scratches and dullness. I think the copper will polish nice.

The cable stop in the photo above is frozen in place. I don't know what I am going to do about it yet, I am thinking it might be fine staying there and polishing in place. It would just cause unneeded damage removing it.

I gave the Continental frame a deep cleaning and then started working through the polishing grits. It took a good deal of time working through the courser grits on the more rough spots. After working through the fine grits and applying some wax the frame looks fantastic. There are some rough spots but the paint really came back nice. The copper color shines deep! The rough spots I sealed with just a clear. The copper color is very hard to match in a touch up paint and a bad match for touch up paint looks much worse then the rough spots. Overall I am very happy with the results of the Copper paint polishing. The fork blade decals however wiped of in cleaning, I wish they where in better condition. I hope the copper shine comes through in the photos, I had a very hard time photographing the copper color.

I have a lot of the components soaking. Today I am going to start on the wheels. Check back soon for more!
I started with the rear wheel. I started by removing the quick release skewer and it felt like the whole axle was loose, I didn't think much of it, just thought the bearing cones where loose but it ended up being a broken axle. A broken axle happens at times, the frame and skewer pinches everything in place so its not always noticed until everything works loose. I searched through the parts collection and found a replacement axle. I then transferred all the axle pieces to the replacement axle and everything turned out good.
The wheels where in pretty good starting shape besides the broken axle, just a little surface rust here and there on the rims and some very old grease in the hubs. I cleaned everything and started the polishing process. The wheel hubs polished very nice. With some work the rim look great! I built up the wheel hubs with new bearings and grease and trued the wheels. The Bontragger tires are in great shape but I did have to replace the front tire tube, it would not hold air and found 3 punctures.
Overall I am very happy with the wheels, they look great and spin forever on the stand. I can't wait to see them on the bike!

On a lot of the components for the Continental there is what seems to be some etching damage. This can happen a lot just from all the chemicals that are on our roads. At wetter times puddles on the roads can be filled with chemicals and when the water is splashed up on the bike it can do some damage to chrome and especially aluminum. I think the chemical that got splashed on the Continental from the road was an acid because it left some etched marks into the alloy pieces. A lot of that can be polished out.
I started with the headset and shift levers. The shift levers are apart of the headset so I started with them. I broke the shift elvers down and polished all the pieces on the polishing wheels. The pieces polished nice, she shift levers had a little pitting on them but overall they are not to bad. One of the shift lever cable stops was bent inward, with a little work on the anvil and with the nylon hammers that piece bent back nicely.
The headset pieces spent a little time in the crock pot for cleaning and then worked through the polishing wheels. The headset polished nicely. This is my favorite shaped headset but you never get to see it under the shift levers and front cable hanger. I packed the bearings in grease and the headset set spins very smooth. I like the polished pieces against the copper color very much!

The handlebars and stem are in descent starting shape. The stem had a little bit of that etching and the brake levers had a lot of the etching. I was very happy the stem removed so easily, there was a good deal of rust on it. I have not had good luck with stuck stems lately.
I cleaned all the pieces and started working through the polishing wheels. I really like the shape of the stem with the cove and the "S" logo stamp. With some time the stem really polished nice and the etching spots where removed. I really really like this stem polished.
With some time on the polishing wheels the brake levers also polished very nice and all the etching spots went away. I am very happy with the results and thrilled the etching polished away, polished away actually pretty easily. Installed the handlebars, brake levers and stem look fantastic! I love this stuff!

The seat post is in ok starting shape, the original saddle is in good shape. I cleaned and polished the seat post and seat binder along with the cable hanger. The seat binder looks amazing! The seat post really polished nice! Installed the seat post, binder and cable hanger look fantastic!

Next on the list was the brake calipers. The brake calipers where a little rough in that they where very gritty and did not want to disassemble very easy. When I got the brake calipers apart I gave everything a good cleaning and started on the polishing wheels. The pieces of the brake calipers really polished nice. With all the appropriate areas lubricated the calipers went back together very easy and open and close very smooth. I like the center pull brakes from this era, they work so much better then the side pull brakes did and they look great restored. The calipers look fantastic next to the copper paint and the cleaned and treated black wall tires.

The derailleurs where next on the list. The derailleurs where a little rough starting out. There is some rust damage to the chrome in areas. I cleaned all the pieces tot he derailleurs and carefully worked through the polishing grits. The rough areas in the chrome came back a long ways. There are still a few rough spots but a lot better then it was. I like that some parts on the underside of the rear derailleur is brass and polished out it is a very nice contrast to the chrome. The front derailleur has more rough spots then the rear but the front derailleur looks better then it did and with all the pivot points flushed and lubricated the front derailleur function very smooth and tight. The rear derailleur looks fantastic considering where it started, the best part is it function super smooth and tight and the jockey wheels spin very nice. I wish the derailleurs where a little better to start with but over all I am very happy with the results!

With the Continental almost complete it was time to wire the bike and installed the handlebar tape. I went through every color of cable housing I had and in the end I thought the light silver color looked best with the copper color. Just a little contrast with the copper.
I installed the handlebar tape tape, the tape is made by Ritchey and I really like this tape. It is a synthetic leather and looks and feels very close to leather with out some of the sweat and water issues of leather. Installed I am very happy with the cable housings and handlebar tape.

The saddle had some scuffs on it I was not able to get out but the saddle did have a good cleaning and a treating. The rails where also polished out. I am very happy with the results of the seat coupler. It came back beautifully.

The pedals where just to far gone. Very rough and one of them had a bend in the axle I was unable to remove. We replaced the pedals with new.

The kick stand was pretty rough with a lot of rust. I removed as much rust as I could and polished the metal. With the metal polished I applied some rust inhibitor. I am happy with the kick stand now.

We have some beautiful weather right now so I was able to test ride and road tune the Continental. The shifting of the Continental is very smooth and extremely easy! One of the best shifting Schwinns I have come across. The brakes work very well with just a little road adjustment. The rear wheel had a little bump in it. I brought it back in the shop and took as much of that bump out as I could at the truing stand. I also pounded out a pretty bad curb dent. The rear wheel is a lot better now. I am going to adjust it a slight bit more and give another test ride.
Out doors the copper color is stunning. The paint has a few rough spots but man does that copper look good! I am very happy with the black handlebar tape with the black wall tires and the black saddle. I am also very happy with the light silver cable housings, I think if they where black it would be to much black on the Continental. The alloy and chrome look great! The stem and handlebars are stunning in the sun light! I am very happy with the Continental! One more test ride and it will be ready for many many more miles!

Great Job John! I really love that rich cooper color, I have rebuilt a varsity and a Le Tour mixte but have always wanted to find a Continental to restore - some day.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! As a teen, I always liked the continental, but could never afford one. 50 years later, I found one two towns from my home. Good shape and rock solid still! I'll be dismantling soon.Your photos are very much appreciated and I will be visiting this page often!
