This week I started work on Steven's mid 1980's Miyata 310 restoration. Readers know how much I like Miyata bicycles, they are so well made and well thought out. The 310 is a nice Sport Touring model but we are going to build it up even better. Steven has a few very nice bicycles, a Lite Speed, a Giant and owner of the mint Trek 400 I restored a couple months back but this Miyata is being built up for a specific purpose. The purpose is for longer rides, maybe a century or a brevet, some back road riding and a longer ride to Rockford, about 90 miles I think??
I can't wait to get started and see the results of the Miyata 310 as its what I like best, longer rides, exploring rough old roads and a good all day comfort.
The Miyata will receive a total restoration along with new tires, tubes, handlebar tape, new saddle and a new rack. The Miyata is a little dirty and dull but I think it is in very nice condition under the dirt and dullness and will restore beautifully!
What is really nice is the Miyata has Shimano Golden Arrow components, or at least the black arrow components, which are amazing components. The brake calipers are not Golden Arrow but Steven is looking for some replacement Golden Arrow calipers. The crank is also a Sugino Signature which is really nice!

The Miayat 310 hung in the shop for a couple wheels and everyone who came through was drawn to it instantly, everyone loves the paint scheme and the seat tube decal with a couple colored lines is an eye drawer, everyone loves that decal and me too! That decals calls to the graphic designer in me!
I disassembled the Miyata 310 and it was hard to tell what condition the frame was in because the dirt really blended into the color of the frame. I cleaned the frame and found only one small scratch and a few scuffed up areas. With the frame cleaned I started working through the polishing grits, it actually took a lot more polishing then I was expecting but the results are just spectacular!! The charcoal color polished to a deep shine with some metallic flake, the red is just perfect and the decals are amazing!! I love it!! I love this stuff!!
I was curious of the weight of the frame of the Miyata 310 because moving around it felt pretty light, it came in at 5 lbs 6 oz, not to bad for a Sport Touring bike!

I should have been doing the write up as I went but it is smack in the middle of crazy busy tune up season and I got behind.
The headset and bottom bracket where in descent starting shape. I took the pieces out of the crock pot and then did the polishing. The headset and bottom bracket polished beautifully and with new bearings and grease both the headset and bottom bracket are very smooth. I am happy with the results.

The crank is a very nice Sugino Signature. The crank is surprisingly light. I also really like the bronze colored large chain ring. I cleaned the pieces and then did the polishing on the polishing wheels. Installed the crank looks amazing.

The derailleurs are amazing Shimano Golden Arrow, one of my all time favorites. I cleaned all the pieces to the derailleurs and then did the polishing. Golden Arrows polish so beautifully, the alloy just begs to be polished. Installed the derailleur look fantastic!! I love it!!

The seat post is a nice one, and I say that because I love fluted seat posts.The seat post polished beautiful and looks great against the polished frame. A San Marco saddle will be installed at the end to protect it form getting dirty.

The handlebars and stem are a little alter in the build then normal, this is because the original stem has just a crazy reach which would become very uncomfortable over time. I wanted to wait for Steven to get a look at the many I have on hand. I don't know why but it seem s in the 1980's crazy long reach stems where all the rage.
The new stem polished very nice and will be a much better fit for sport touring. The handlebars are also beautiful Signature models and they polished very easy and look fantastic.
The brake levers are in descent shape and the brake lever hoods are in amazing condition. The brake levers polished beautifully and installed with all the rest are amazing. I am extremely happy with the results of the cockpit area!

I think Golden Arrow shift levers are the most beautiful shift levers out there, they polish like little jewels and look amazing installed, I love it!

The wheels are very nice wheels that look to be in great shape under all the grime and dullness. I disassembled the wheels and cleaned out the old grease and dirt. The wheel hubs polished very nice and the bronze wheel rims look great. New bearings and grease have the wheels spinning great. The wheels turned out amazing, I am really happy with the results.

Steven deiced the Miyata needed the matching Golden Arrow brake calipers, I think that is a great idea. We found these on Ebay, they are two rear brake calipers with a front caliper bolt installed, or at least that is how it was described on Ebay, it was not exactly how it was described. Lucky though I was able to cut a very long caliper hex key nut to fit and the front brake fits well.
The Golden Arrow brake calipers look fantastic installed and will work good and I think perfect for the Miyata.

The red brake cable housing was in descent shape so I cleaned it and treated the internal the best it would. I usually replace all cable housings but the original was in descent shape and it would be a shame to loose the look of these housings. Everything works great with the original housings.

Steven chose Panaracer Pasela Commuter Tough tires, I think they are a great choice for the way the Miyata 310 will be used. Being folding bead the tires are very easy to install and installed the tires look great on the Miyata.

Steven got the San Marco saddle online from Ben's Cycles in Milwaukee. The saddle is a perfect choice, a beautiful and comfortable saddle! It is the icing on the top of the Miayata 310 build, I love it!!

I have never used fizik handlebar tape and never tried it before working on one of Steven's bicycles. I have found it to be very nice handlebar tape and looks great installed. Gel pads where also installed under the handlebar tape. I really like the results of the handlebar tape, it is very cushy and with the gel pads even more so.

One of the water bottle cage bolts was stripped and frozen, I used an extractor bit and the bolt removed easy enough.

The pedals are nice SR pedals. One is missy a dust cap for now. I cleaned and lubricated the pedals and then did the polishing. The pedals polished very nicely and installed they look great.

That completes the Miyata 310. It is one beautiful bicycle! I love the color and the red accents. The gum walls are perfect for the Miyata and I am thinking I will need a San Marco saddle like this for myself.
The weather is very crappy today for a test ride and final photos so I am hoping tomorrow will be better for it. I can't wait to try the Miyata 310!

Love me some Miyata's my first ever old 10 (12) speed restoration was a late 790's Miyata 912. That 310 is a beauty and the paint came out great look forward to the rest of the build.
