Component Restoration for a Colnago Pista

Colnago Pista Component Restoration - Wheels - After

A good customer shipped me the components for a Colnago Pista to restore.  The frame is going for a repaint to Chris Anderson I believe but I have to check on that again.  A quick plug for myself for those contacts I get about to far to ship bicycles to have restored and cheaper alternative is to just ship the components.

I hope to maybe get a photo when the Colnago is assembled.  The componets are very cool but some of them have been rode hard.  The wheels are Campagnolo, the handlebars I have to look the brand up again when I go in the shop.  The pedals are what I think are the coolest Campagnolo ever.  The crank is a beautiful Campagnolo.

The finish on the crank is pretty rough so it will be polished off to a high mirror finish.  The wheels are pretty rough, they have seen there share of miles which is not a big deal because miles are restorable but sometime in there life they have been cleaned with a very stiff brush or even a metal brush so there are lots of grooves and scraps.

I am not sure the best way to present the restoration of the components so I am just going to go in the order I worked on the components.

I started with the crank, there is the painted finish on the crank arms that is scuffed and scraped and in rough shape.  I polished the finish off to a high mirror finish, the bad part is loosing the Campagnolo decals.  Overall I am happy with the results of the crank, the crank arms polished very nice and a little hand polishing made the chain rings look pretty good. I like the polished photo below where you can see the chanring bolts reflecting in the crank arm.

Next I worked on the stem and handlebars, I have to look on another memory card in the shop for the handlebar photos when I go into the shop.  The stem is very interesting to me, there are a few indents at the bend of the stem, I think those indents where at one time the Colnago Club logo that over the years was polished or worn down.  The stem polished beautifully, I am very happy with the stem.

Ray has replacement NOS handlebar tape the same that I installed on the handlebars, it took a lot of doing because the handlebar tape is a little brittle but turned out very nice, photos to come.  Overall I love the way the stem and handlebars turned out.

The bottom bracket is a Campagnolo bottom bracket, can't get better then that.  The bottom bracket was dirty and dull but not much wear.  I cleaned the components and went to the polishing wheel.  The bottom bracket turned out fantastic and I replaced the bearings in the bearing cages so it will function fantastic.

The headset is very interesting and nice.  Its the same type that was on the Teledyne Titian I restored a couple of months ago.  The headset has a very interesting to me roller bearings.  I cleaned the headset components and hit the polishing wheel.  The headset polished beautifully, I can't wait to see it on the painted frame.

The pedals are Campagnolo and in my opinion the most beautiful pedals by far!  The pedals are in pretty good starting shape.  I gave them a good cleaning and lubricating and then polishing.  The pedals really polished nice and I imagine will be amazing installed.

The seat post is a beautiful Campagnolo seat post, maybe the most beautiful made.  It polished very nicely and looks so sleek.

The wheels are very cool Campagnolo with Fiamme rims (I need to go to the shop and get the rim spelling, as most readers know spelling is by far not my best subject.)  The wheels have some rough miles on them and at onetime where cleaned with a very course brush or even metal brush.  The course brush damages the surface of the alloy because the alloy is soft, it leaves grooves that are to deep to polish away with out removing way to much alloy.  So anyone reading this always clean your bicycles with a very soft sponge and not brushes!

I disassembled the wheels and got to cleaning and polishing.  The cleaning went well after a lot of work to remove the old rim glue. With the rim glue removed it was time to polish.  Polishing went well considering the brush damage, the hubs polished pretty nice with only some brush marks left.  The rims polished just okay with the brush marks, you can see the brush marks in the photos.  New rim decals where installed and I will take photos of the rim decals installed.

I reassembled the wheel hubs with new grease and bearings and the hubs spin like silk, after a little truing of the wheels the wheels spin so nice which I am extremely happy about!  The tires are shot so I will let Ray decide on the tires he wants to go with.

The chrome fork is a little rough, there is some pitting from rust removal in the past.  I cleaned the fork and started polishing.  In the end the fork probably needs a re-chroming for perfect results but I was able to bring a little shine back and remove some of the brush swirl marks.  The Colnago stamping on the fork crown is so cool.

I think that is all for the Colnago Components restoration.  I will post the few missing photos tomorrow.  Thank you for the interest.
